What to Expect When Going Wedding Dress Shopping
Our stunning selection of wedding dresses at our Bridal Shop in Farnham.
When going wedding dress shopping, you can expect a relaxed and personal experience where expert stylists guide you through trying on different styles, finding your perfect fit, and preparing your gown for the big day.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to what happens when you go wedding dress shopping, so you know exactly what to expect and can enjoy every moment.
1. Booking your appointment
First things first: book your appointment at your chosen bridal boutique once you’ve confirmed your venue and wedding date. We recommend starting your search around 10 to 18 months before the wedding, which gives you plenty of time for ordering and fittings.
At Bridal Indulgence, we hold a beautiful collection of designer wedding dresses from Jenny Yoo, Watters, Grace Loves Lace and House of Flora, available to try in sizes UK6-18. We also run sample sales twice a year, offering brides the chance to purchase off-the-rack gowns.
When booking, it helps to share as much detail as possible, your dress size, favourite designers, inspiration photos or even a Pinterest mood board. This helps our stylists prepare a curated rail of gowns that reflect your style and vision.
2. Who to bring (or not bring)
You can bring one or two trusted friends or family members whose opinions you value. More than three or four can make decision-making difficult, so keeping your group small often creates a calmer experience.
That said, some brides prefer to come alone, and many do! They enjoy one-to-one time with Kerri and the team to help them find the perfect wedding dress.
3. Trying on different styles
Once you arrive, the fun truly begins. You’ll explore different silhouettes, fabrics and details to see what feels most like you. Keep an open mind, many brides find they fall in love with a completely different style than expected.
A few tips for your appointment:
Wear seamless, nude/light coloured underwear.
Bring your wedding shoes (or something similar in height) to get the right perspective on length and fit.
Sit, walk, raise your arms and imagine your day. Comfort and confidence are key.
Kerri and the team can also share their expertise on trending wedding dresses and how to choose timeless styles that flatter your height, shape and personal style. Read our guide to timeless wedding dress styles here.
4. Fittings, timings and ordering your dress
When you’ve found the one, your stylist will guide you through ordering and fittings. The ideal time to purchase is around twelve months before the wedding to allow time for production (up to six months depending on the designer) and alterations require 2-3 months.
If time isn’t on your side, there are still options, so don’t worry! Some designers offer a rush service (expect to pay an additional 10-20% for this) or there’s always the option of an off-the-rack gown. If you’re short of time, feel free to get in touch and we can discuss your options.
After your wedding gown arrives, expect two or three fittings (sometimes more, depending on the adjustments needed). These appointments are when your dress becomes truly yours, tailored perfectly to your body shape and movement.
Fittings are all about perfecting the final look and feel of your gown. They allow for small adjustments to accommodate any weight changes and to refine details such as straps, necklines or the train. It’s also the time to perfect the hem once you’ve chosen your wedding shoes.
5. How it fits with your venue and theme
Your wedding dress should feel at home in your setting and season. A structured ball gown might suit a historic manor, while a light, flowing design could be perfect for a garden or destination celebration.
At Bridal Indulgence, we love helping brides visualise how their gown will look and feel in their chosen venue.
Charlotte, one of our brides, found her dream House of Flora gown for her glamorous Las Vegas wedding. She wanted something sparkly and sophisticated, but came to her appointment with an open mind. The shimmering fabric and delicate train of her chosen dress perfectly matched the energy of her Vegas celebration. Best of all, it’s a gown she’ll cherish and wear again when celebrating with loved ones here in the UK.

6. Accessories and finishing touches
Once your dress is chosen, it’s time to think about accessories, veils, hairpieces, jewellery and shoes. Your stylist can help you find pieces that enhance rather than overpower your gown.
If you’re planning a winter or evening wedding, consider adding a wrap, bolero or detachable overskirt for versatility.
7. Making the purchase
When you’ve said yes to your dress, you’ll either pay a deposit (for made-to-order gowns) or full payment if you’re purchasing off the rack. You’ll receive an order form confirming design details, size, and delivery timeframe.
